This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in our collective pursuit of promoting conflict resolution and effective dispute management. As we gather to witness the accreditation of the institute’s council members, I am reminded of the critical role that ADR plays in fostering harmony and understanding in our society.
Research and statistics have shown that the formal court system can not cope with the number of disputes that need resolution so there is an imperative need for alternative dispute resolution. Last year the Ogun State Judiciary hosted the first judges conference on alternative dispute resolution. So, the institute’s commitment to provide a platform for various ADR mechanisms to resolve dispute is commendable.
The importance of conflict management cannot be over stated in these modern times as disputes can arise even from the most trivial issues. What we try to do in Ogun is to try and train persons in Community Development Associations and when they resolve traditional disputes, they bring their agreements and they are signed and they will become judgements of the court. This is to ensure that everybody has access to justice.
The Institute needs to imbibe effective communication skills for resolving contemporary conflicts and disputes and also develop the mediation capacity for effective conflict management.
Equipping participants with creative abilities to manage information and conflict situations and that moving forward, accredited council members are urged to remain committed to the institute’s mission as their dedication to promote ADR will have a profound impact on our society.
The Honorable Justice expressed her profound gratitude to the institute’s founders, staff and stakeholders for their tireless efforts in ensuring that the institute’s vision becomes a reality and that she prays that we all should strive to create a more harmonious and peaceful society.
